Believe it or not this brown cheese is made from goats milk and is quite the staple item for many a Norwegians fridge. Gjetost is pronounced like Yay-toast! Its a must try. Gjetost has a rich mildly sweet flavor and is perfect on some seedy toast with a little homemade Strawberry Rhubarb jam! My family also loves it on top of the infamous Heart Shaped Norwegian Waffles or served on top of some fresh apple slices. The typical Norwegian breakfast is dark bread toasted and an array of toppings such as, Gjetost, homemade jams, soft boiled eggs, shrimp cheese in a tube, or liver pate. I would always look forward to breakfast when my grandparents came to visit or when my brother and I would stay with them… there is something so special about all sitting together and simply enjoying toast in a variety of ways… and OH the smell… mmm toast.
