Growing up my mom would bake fresh bread on Sundays so we could have some pretty amazing open-faced sandwiches all week. But of course, a fresh, tasty loaf rarely ever lasted more than 3 days in our house. There isn’t much better than a steamy slice of grainy bread with butter and homemade jam.
Whenever I move to a new city I think I am constantly on the search for a taste of home. I want bread that tastes like my mom’s Sunday bake days and I just want a little love in my food. Basically what I need is my Food Family, spots that feel like home or taste like it.
Market Ipanema in Nolita is home to me. Here you will find some of the healthiest choices you can take on the go and the best part is they make there own HOMEMADE wholewheat bread that transports me back to my childhood kitchen. You will also find a wall of fresh and nutrient dense options to take with you on the go like, fresh granola on top of hazelnut cacao cream, or fruits and berries.
Market Ipanema is filled with options whether you are gluten free, sugar free or dairy free you can always find something to eat. They focus on wholegrain, good fats, lean proteins and locally grown vegetables. On of my favorite dishes to order is a poached egg on top of homemade lemon zest ricotta and a slice of thick homemade wholewheat bread with a side of arugula. Its insane how good it is… I can’t even explain it.
Another favorite for my gluten intolerant friends is called Pão de Queijo AKA Brazilian cheese bread. I am literally drooling while I think of how to explain them.
They are made of tapioca flour and parmesan cheese and are crusty on the outside and gooey inside. THEY ARE EVERYTHING.
Did I mentions they are served hot?…. yeah it doesn’t get much better. WAIT… it totally does when this piece of the rainbow hits your lips. Meet Market Ipanema’s Veggie Burger, hands down the best veggie burger I have ever tasted and look at all the colors!!! The other best part is that they actually make all their own buns and ketchups as well!
I try to always go with my man or a friend just so we can order many things because I can never decide on just one.
The acai bowl, also definitely the best I have had in NYC, period. I mean hello… trust the Brazilians on this one guys. They also top it with fruit and berries and make there own granola from scratch to go along with it.
Incase I didn’t sell you on this place already *insert my handsome man Phillip Torres* I think he says it all.
I mean…. ’nuff said 😉
