A new member to my food family just popped up in our little neighborhood of Nolita and I can’t stop talking about it- seriously, just ask my friends. I am the type of person that seeks out a little piece of home in every new place that I visit and in every new place I live. Whether it’s charm, flavor, smell, or decor I am on the hunt for places that seem to be on the same page and of the same spirit as me. Without knowing what I like or what I expect, I want to walk in and feel at home. At De Maria, I am home.
De Maria only opened a only a few weeks ago and the first time I saw it Phil and I just happened to be walking down the street after lunch. I noticed a sign on the wall that said “Bless Your Soul” and at first I thought it could be a new yoga studio and then, peaking through the window, I saw some of the dishes on the table…
You guys, these dishes were like a painting or work of art. I saw vibrantly colored yellow eggs and bright pinks that resembled some of my favorite Tom Ford Lips pallets. Although we had just eaten, I still had to go in just to smell the air and check the menu. My eyes grew 3 sizes when I saw the words BONE BROTH and TUMERIC poached eggs… I felt like my heart was here before me to tell them all the things I love.
I came back for lunch the next day and really haven’t stopped since. I daydream about their gluten free moist banana bread and cheese biscuit smothered in guava jam. Yummm.
And now I bring you one of my favorite things about this place… the BONE BROTH! Walking around on a frigid NYC day, bone broth is all I crave and De Maria has a great steaming massive colorful mug of broth topped with fresh herbs, and with a nice kick of spice.
I highly recommend the focaccia topped with broiled lemon slices. Usually I am not one for a bready snack before a meal but this was GOOD. It melts in your mouth and has just enough salt and tartness to it to make it addicting. I thought I would just have a bite, but couldn’t stop myself… I always use the excuse of “it’s research” as I take bite after bite, I just have to try and figure out how they did it.
After some cheeky nibbles and wetting our palette with soothing bone broth we were ready food and guys, it only gets better! The colors are insane, and the quinoa hash brown with a turmeric poached egg is the crispiest hash brown I have ever tried and it really hits the spot. We also opted in for a side of chorizo sausage and it was a really good decision. Most chorizo is too heavy and greasy for me, not this one. DROOL.
When I was growing up my mom used to say “eat the rainbow.” No… not the skittles version but what she meant was eat things that are rich in color, because rich in color = rich in fruits and veggies, vitamins and minerals. Gosh would she be proud of this bowl… I’d be temped to rename it “The Rainbow Bowl.” The rim of the bowl is smeared in avo and filled with chickpeas, quinoa, pickled veggies, sprouts and a numeric poached egg. Eat the rainbow: mission accomplished.
De Maria is currently open for breakfast, lunch and pre-dinner and has plans for full dinner soon! I might as well pack a bag when that happens because I could stay all day.
Check them out!!
